Take my advice, i'm not using it anyway "why choice matters and why some things should never change"

Take my advice, i'm not using it anyway "Why choice matters and why some things should never change"

Learning from defeat, rising up and going undefeated … with a twist

                Everywhere I have worked in my short, but meaningful, work experience I have managed to demonstrate my potential, skills and ideas and this always rewarded me with expanding my working objectives to something more suitable to my interests and the needs of the organization. This has never been due to me being exceptional or amazing, but rather being able to analyze the needs of the company and management and offering my own view and sphere of expertise to those needs rather than the basics of the occupied profession.

                This time it was not much different. After a few months on a position with rather large influence and effect without too much operational work I decided it is time to join the troops in “the mud” – to become an operational manager with a team of people working directly with clients - busy position with larger responsibilities, but with a rather motivating bonus scheme and a clear path to the top. It does not sound too complicated, and having a view of the position, being surrounded by managers as such, I expected that the transition would not be too difficult. On the contrary, I expected my Human Resource Management expertise and skills to help me manage the position well.

The defeat

                I am sure that by reading the two paragraphs above most of you already had the impression everything would be great and flowing. It would have been nice, or not, to be like that but here was the result – after 2 weeks of on and off the field training and 4 days of work – a complete mental burnout, very little food consumed, 14 hours’ work days, chaos, desperation and insecurity.

                A gloomy picture, a bit hard to imagine after so few days of work, but once experienced, it cannot be described. The reality is that the work responsibilities, or daily life was not the issue, it was a transition, without a doubt, but the problem was different – the job was something I am not.

                Without going into the specifics of the job, for corporate reasons mostly, it required a simple thing that I could not be – indifferent; Indifferent to the issues of the clients, of the team, of the results, of the fact that the work will never be over or completed.

                But I am anything but indifferent. I care before all – care for my work, my company, my responsibilities, my team, not to the level, in which I bring my work home, but as long as I am in the office I am 101% there. This is why I have always managed to get in the good graces of management, to sell my ideas, to work with ease. This is why … I had to quit my new position.

The choice

                Choice is never easy – on the one had I had taken a responsibility, announced to the entire company, I had the weight of my colleagues, my superiors, my boss – who supported me and had great expectations of me all the way. I had the weight of my own opinion of what is going on, of my parents, of my friends. On the other – to work the job I had to become something that I not only was not, but had sworn I will never become. To accept that I will always be busy, stressed, perhaps gets twice the salary in bonuses, but to have difficulties going to bed even.

And so there was a choice – quit, but keep yourself or stay but change what you are.

                After reading the topic of this article, I am sure most of you know what I chose, but let me explain why – because a lifetime from now, no one, but you, will stand in front of the mirror and have to answer the question – “was it worth it?!”

                We all start with a dream, an idea, and a set of principles of how we see the world and how we see ourselves and at some point on the road most of use abandon this – some for money, most for family, some for a set of wrong choices, but it is what happens. I understand that no one is immune and one day it might happen to myself, but not while I have a choice.

                One of the many benefits of being 25 is that you can make tough choices easy – you have no mortgage, no children, no wife, no credit card, you are as close to free as you can be. Of course, you are far from free, because you still hold the weight of everyone’s expectations, including your own, the understanding that you are no longer a child and everything in life has consequences.

                And I accepted the consequences – I may lose peoples respect, trust, and my job even – but I cannot lose myself. So I resigned my position and awaited my faith.

The defeat

                After many discussions on management level, it was decided that I will be allowed to keep my previous position, with almost no consequences.

                I know it will not be easy to get back to everyone good graces, I know with some people I might never get there. Having seen the other side, however, I can now offer better more suitable solutions and ideas to really help the business, but this is all technical aspects. The real result – is that I survived my own test of resilience. I kept myself even at the risk of losing everything. And today – I came with a smile to work again, with positive thinking, with readiness to help as much as I can, as many as I can, within my own field of expertise, because this is who I am – someone who cares, and while I have a choice – I will never change that … and neither should you!

 Going undefeated

Strength does not come from not being defeated, but from always rising and moving on. Defeat is not resigning something you are not, but surrendering your own views and values for a mission/a goal/ a job.

And as such I do not see my experience as defeat, but rather as an invaluable lesson, that I was lucky to learn so early in my life, while I have a choice. An experience that I managed to rationally analyze even though it was filled with emotions. An experience from which I can keep going and see it before it happens. An experience, that I am thankful for.

The result

                 Faith, however, has a funny way of showing you how right and wrong you are at the same time. In my case – I thought I would go back to my old position, or that I will be fired, but at the end I was told and I  chose to take my new one back. Not because it will change me, not because it will be easy, not because I might succeed, but because I remembered something just as important as everything written above – it is defeat to not try harder, to rise is to keep going, to go undefeated is to accept something that you are not and still keep yourself in it, so take my advice – I’m not using it anyway.

Whiners and Winners - lack of opportunities or an abundance of opportunities

Whiners and Winners - lack of opportunities or an abundance of opportunities

A close friend of mine posted the following picture a few days back, which really grinded my gears

It did not get me because of the statement, which after continuous reading of this article, you will realize it is completely wrong, but because i have a deep respect for my friend and never believed she was a part of the "whining" side of mankind.

Perhaps here, i have to define a few words so that there are no misinterpretations later:

"Whiner" - A company employee, whose defining feature of behavior is to complain about the lack of opportunities, the abundance of issues or the wrong way the company where he or she works is managed. Unfortunately that side of the "workforce" is more of a majority rather than the exception, but this only creates more opportunities for the rest.

"Corporation" - A multinational organization with a medium to large staff size (200 - 20,000)

"Winner" - A company employee or leader, whose defining feature is the conviction to succeed regardless of the environment and circumstances. A person who sees opportunities everywhere and who is not afraid to take chances in order to succeed.

After seeing these three short definitions perhaps quite a few of you are already on the right track of where this will get, but the idea of the story is not to repeat a clear statement, but to rather reset a modern "status quo" way of thinking of the majority of people.

It was a few weeks ago when i read an article posted on LinkedIn, which was yet another condemnation of capitalism, the middle class "illusion" (as the author implied) and the corporate machine living on the back of the "poor working man".

I have also had my fair share of experience with the complaining part of the work force to finally decide to share a few thoughts on the subject.

My bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management had a revolutionary approach to education as did not imply memorizing terms, principles and practices, but to incorporate such a level of self-awareness in all of the students so that we can truly understand now only what we do and why, but what others do as well. This way, in my mind, created a generation of free thinkers, who could never be restricted by systems, policies or statuses.
Since I know how few of us graduated i understand why there are so many people with their "eyes wide shut".

But here comes the pinnacle of this topic. In my mind there are 3 sub-characters of the "whiners"

The three sub-characters of whiners

1. Those who cannot see opportunities - This is the majority of whiners. They are employed for a certain job and they will do it until they are fired or until they are promoted (mostly because of maturity, rather than achievement). Their performance circulates arround the status quo they are set in and regardless how many chances or opportunities they have to change, until someone pushes them to see further or higher they will keep being the same. (some of them - forever)

2. Those who do not want to see opportunities - I believe that everyone has the downsides of their life. From the extremely rich to the extremely poor we all have problems and sometimes they get us down. Unfortunately that part of the whiners are those who consciously or unconsciously decide to be always down, and on many occasions to take others down with them. They are those who complain about everything and if there is a person smart enough (or fed up enough) to show them there are better ways and ways in general, their general behavior is to disapprove of this and find an excuse not to do it (usually laziness, well hidden in a logical answer) A graphical example is:

3. Those who neither see opportunities nor want to see them - They are perhaps the worst kind of employees, friends and people there can be. They are people who will never change anything, let alone themselves and who are capable of destroying anyone’s enthusiasm about anything. The real life - "cancer makers". Unfortunately they exist and in some places they are an abundance of. Mostly its not their fault - they have inherited this behavior from their parents or their cultural environment, but this does not make up for their behavior. My advice (unless you are CEO and can fire them) stay as far away from them as possible, as even the most positive of us can get submerged in their sea of excuses and problems. (They are the people who will always sit and ask "Who moved my cheese?")

Any one of these three types are the majority of general "employees". Those who will never take the extra mile; who will work for years when they could have done their job in days; who will constantly complain about the lack of opportunities or the restrictions that corporations imply on you. Those, who will glorify the idea of "startups", but will never actually create or be part of a startup, since that requires courage, responsibility, conviction and positivism - characteristics that none of them have (and many of them will never have)

So, by now i am sure most of you have identified many of your colleagues and friends in some of these characteristics (perhaps even yourselves). This is the first step to change - to be aware of the need for a change. And why change? Because on the other side are the "winners" and their world looks much different than the one of the "whiners".
The "winners"

They live in a sea of opportunities. Why? Because they have understood a few core fundamentals of life:

- There is nothing in this world, that a person cannot change
- All it takes to change something is to change yourself
- History remembers, those who were not afraid to challenge their status quo or their destiny

And how do they see an opportunity? Quite simple really - they analyze, adapt and push.
To analyze

Regardless of what company you are in, what position you are in, or what economic state you are in - you will never be able to succeed if you do not make a simple SWOT analysis of your current situation.

The strenghts - are the things that make you strong, or the things of the company that you can show you understand would contribute to

The weaknesses - are the things that make you weak. We all have them as all companies have them. There is nothing wrong with that. If you can change them - ok, if you cannot - learn to live with them. In a corporate level - these are the things that you can help coup with or change (the majority of opportunities, given the economic state our world is in)

The opportunities - are the possibilities given the strengths and weaknesses that you have and that the company needs

The threats - realistically the level, to which you are ready to push. (in reality it is my firm belief that the only thing that restricts the level of success of winners is how convicted they are to succeeding.)
To adapt

Here is where all of the whiners fail and all of the winners succeed.

No one is perfect as he/she is. No company is perfect as it is. Perfections is an ideal that we should always strive for and never be ok with anything less than perfect. (a contradicting statement, i agree, but a valid if you look through what the words actually mean)

As such, you should always know that you will have to adapt to the needs of the business you are in and to be able to adapt others to the ways you offer
To push

Here comes the final but most important deal. Here is where the "whiners" true skin is revealed. (When they say - it is too hard, or there are not enough opportunities the real statement is - I am too lazy and too scared to do anything)

And here is where the winners are revealed - It may consume my time, my energy and my life even, but i will succeed. It will cost the company money, time, effort and trust, but it will end up better for anyone.

The push is also where a truly aware brain is shown - To see a chance in any person, in any conversation, any time and place to push for your goals, to push for change.

The end of the story

By now i hope you know what part of the world is the drive and what part is the break. I hope that you are from the winners or that you want to be and i hope that perhaps even if only you change - the world will be a better place.

Since i know how theoretical a story is without an example - here is mine.

I am 25 years old. I am no one and i come from nowhere. I have a total of 2 years working experience and only a Bachelor’s degree. (so you can say i have every right to be a whiner about the lack of opportunities or the bad circumstances around me)

I have worked only in large corporations so far and i have never, ever done anything i did not want. I have always started in some mediocre to little job position and have turned this (in months, not years) to a strategic position, to which i have usually been my own boss, which contributes far more than expected and is rewarded more than expected.

How did i do it? - I have never been afraid to challenge the status quo; I do not believe in limits; I do not accept set terms as unchangeable; I have always been able to show my ideas to the highest possible positions, while maintaining a positive and friendly relationship with all employees - from cleaners to CEOs, but above all - I have devoted my life to a certain goal, which I started to work for since I was 6 years old (when i started learning English).

As such I do not know if i will succeed with my goal, after all I am at the start of my journey or as they say - "Oh Lord, thy sea is so great and my boat is so small", but i know that i will either succeed or die trying. I will keep looking for opportunities, keep seizing them. I will never stop analyzing and adapting, never stop changing, because i know that i can change.

The only question is - are you a "whiner" or a "winner" and which type do you think will have a better life?

Patience and proactiveness - the mythical bond of success or the most common problem for a young professional

A topic which is more than real for myself, but i am sure also for a large number of young professionals is "where is the balance between patience and being proactive?" I started a new job a few months back in a well-established but new to the country company and have been in a constant dilemma whether to be proactive or to be patient when it comes to giving ideas, demanding support or just communicating. From previous experiance I know that shooting ideas (good ones at least) from early on is not as great as it may sound - sure it will get you quick respect, open a few doors if not all doors, but whatever idea you may have it is based on very little observation and experiance and is almost completely guaranteed to create quite a few headaches on the way if not a complete failure.
On the other hand if you do not present what you can do and what you want to do, when will you be seen - probably never. As i said in one of my previous posts "If you don't ask questions, the answer will always be NO".
So here stands the real question - where is the ballance, or the moment in which you have enough, or know enough or can do enough to start being proactive, to put yourself on the map and to take a stand to your colleagues/bosses who you are and where you want to be?! If i say that i know it will be a lie, if i say there is some sort of a calculation or excel formula - there is not, but I may be able to share a few thoughts on the matter. First of all in my mind it is not an "either or" subject but as stated in the topic - "a bond of success". Why can you not be just pro-active or just patient - well quite simple - if you are always pro-active in the best case scenario everyone will stop working and expect you to generate ideas, work and projects turning your company into an individual dependent system, which if you have not seen it with your own eyes, trust me that it is catastrphic. In the worst case you will get a burnout at the age of 35 or a heart attack at the age of 45. Both of them are scenarios that i would not want for myself and as such would not recommend. The other option is for you to be patient that your boss will give you work, or good work, or interesting work, all of which is an illusion or if it actually happens, you are in a company that has too much free time, which is never good for a business in the 21st cetury. So since both options individually do not seem to be great enough - let us look at the compbination - the bond of success. You may notice that i have called it "a bond of success", which is not because i want to have a catchy title or because i want to present you with a word riddle, but because while the goal is balance between being proactive and patient, the real bond is between two other things - IQ and EQ. Since the abriviations may not be familliar to all of you, what i am talking about is intelligence and emotional intelligence. Since both of them are unmesearuble i will give you a short description in a realtionship with the topic.
Intelligence - is the ability to find and use the logical connection between things. In the case of proactiveness and patience it is the ability to see patterns in the moments of pressure and less pressure for your bosses, colleagues, the business and so on. If you can trully master this, except being successful in pretty much anythng you will always be able to properly identify the right time, place and topic for everyting Emotional Intelligence - is the ability to find and use the mood and tentions of your colleagues, bosses, the business and so on. If you can master this you will be able to prevent yourself from talking to people when they are angry, busy, under pressure and on the other hand to talk to your boss when he/she is in a good mood, which of course will increase you chance of success. So here is the key - look for the moment, time, place and mood for your ideas and remember - the moment to give a good idea is not when it comes up, but when it will be bought, becuase as i said in another post of mine - "It is not enough to have a good idea, but to be able to sell that idea". Sure you may be able to get an ok even in the busiest times, only to get wierd questions, negativity and even resistance later on. As always i will provide you with a few useful questions for yourselves to ask:

1. Have I seen all the company (people, procesess, etc.)?;
2. Have I read the company history?;
3. Have I identified the busy and not so busy periods?;
4. In which period am I now?;
5. Is my boss (target group) busy now?;
6. Does he/they have problems at home/spouse/work? Has he eaten today?;
7. What do they need to like my ides?;
8. Who will be able to help me on the road to success?;
9. What will be the physical benefits?;
10. What will be the psychological benefits?;

Of course this is not an exact science and we can all be wrong from time to time. Of course you can misjudge a situation or a moment or once you have that moment to overdo it and do more harm than good. Of course you can lose yourself in thoughts of when is the right moment or if it has passed, for the heart of a young man (or woman) beats fast, but do not forget that a campaign is rarely won in a single "battle" or "showdown" it is continous patience and continous pro-activeness that will get you from where you are and where you want to be!
Human Resources – a partner and a trustworthy ally. The role and importance of internal communication. There are a lot of opinions about what the role of Human Resources needs to be in the modern business. There is one opinion, however, which is crystal clear – Human Resource Management deal with humans.

There is nothing clearer, which separates us from all the other biological species on this planet than communication – the ability to speak, to listen, to understand, to disagree, but above all, to communicate between ourselves for everything and everyone. To remove that opportunity means to take the most human side from us, to take the possibility to be something different than animals on two legs. Even when we talk “to ourselves” we are, in fact, communicating between the conscious and subconscious, between logic and emotion, between ourselves and our ego.

When we talk about the workplace, communication is vital and important. I cannot show this paper, unless I ask someone to read it. No one will read it, if I do not say that it exists and so on. A lot of people and professionals, often say “I know what she will say” or “I know what he thinks”, but the truth is, and it is a fundamental truth indeed – “I am no one else on this planet, but myself and I am not in no one’s brain but my own” and most importantly “I will never, in any way know what another person thinks, wants or does not want, unless I ask”.

To ask is simple, if the goal is just to ask, like when we meet our neighbor down the street and ask “How’s it going”. On the other hand, asking someone how he is, and receiving a, more or less, honest answer is something very complex. It requires trust, and trust is something even harder

In a slightly more operational view, trust consists of the following factors:

- Information (who is asking and why)
- Security (what can and cannot follow)
- Experience (has it happened before and what happened then)
- Result (I trusted, let us see what you will do with my trust)

Selling your ideas vs. Having a good idea. What is more important in the modern business

What is more important - to have a good idea or to be able to sell it? A question that stands everywhere in the modern business.

A lot of people believe that having a good idea is all that it takes, for example: an idea about organizational development, that trough restructuring would enable better career growth, a clear career path, easier management and higher results. This would be brilliant on its own, of course after being developed fully, but unless you are your own boss and have an abundance of money, someone has to know about it, like it, permit it and incorporate it and this is how we reach the conclusion that being able to sell your ideas is more important than just having them. Unless you are able to communicate it properly and to the right people at the right time, this idea will sit on someones desk, or worse - the complain box (trash can). Being a young HR, or a young professional, we are all full of ideas, most of which are good and relevant to the time and world we live in. However being young also steps in the way of having an easy go at selling your ideas or even being heard.
And so after having an idea, the most important thing is not just to present it, but to analyze who are the key people that will like it; who will support you and be your ally and most importantly - to show the benefit for everyone who have to approve it.

Of course, this all comes from 3 very important rules:

1. If you do not go after what you want, you will never have it
2. If you do not ask, the answer will always be no
3. If you do not step forward, you will ways be in the same place

So take chances, pursue your goals and do not forget - what is the benefit of being a young professional if you do not take risks, while you can?!
